Meta Ray-Ban Smart Glasses: MKBHD Just Blew My Mind—Are Smart Glasses Finally Good?

Wow. Just, wow. I have just watched a video of Marques Brownlee (MKBHD), 'Wait... Smart glasses are suddenly good?' and in truth, my heart, which loves technology, is jumping sky-high! I really enjoyed the way he presented the amazing progress that Meta had made, going from an expensive, cumbersome prototype to a much-polished, operational product in under a year. What actually struck me was the fact that we could be on the edge of a post-smartphone world. It is not just a review, and it is a glimpse into the future where our technology is the continuation of our vision, and it is a video that everyone who has ever questioned smart glasses should watch!

Key Points Summary

In his review, MKBHD was extremely comprehensive and emphasized the extent to which these new Meta Ray-Ban Smart Glasses have been developed. This is what I actually found intriguing.

  1. Monocular Display & Brightness: There is a permanent, full-color, and impossibly sharp monocular display in the right eye, where before the glasses could only display, as a prototype, a few lines of text. The display is bright (with a brightness of 5,000 nits) and is ideal to view outdoors because it comes like a real-life head-up display in your peripheral vision.

  2. Neural Band Control: This is an interaction that is smooth using a neural band (worn on the wrist), which is based on the surface EMG technology to capture electrical impulses caused by a hand gesture. The text input, especially the ability to draw letters in mid-air, was a reliable and fast one that impressed MKBHD.

  3. Near-Invisible Light Leak: One area where the prototypes have been improved is that light leak is almost completely eliminated. What is displayed on the display is practically invisible to the outside world, which is a significant privacy issue.

  4. Included Functionality: In addition to the standard smart glasses features (AI communication, music, and POV video recording), the display has much-needed capabilities. This has the visualization of the UI, a camera viewfinder, which allows messaging and video calls (seeing the other person!), turn-by-turn navigation with rotating maps, and real-time live captioning and translation of speech.

  5. Design & Portability: The glasses are a bit thick, but they are self-contained (they contain no separate computer puck) and are 69 g, which makes them easy to carry around. The clever charging case is folded up and has four more charges.

  6. Pricing & Ecosystem: MKBHD speculates Meta may be selling them at a loss to cause adoption for $800. The major drawback is the use of first-party apps on Meta (WhatsApp to message/call, the mapping service by Meta), and there is no general app store when it launches, although Spotify is present.

Your Thoughts

The aspect I particularly liked about this video, and which completely motivated me, was the sheer speed at which Meta was improving. It is actually amazing that in less than one year, such a functionality can be taken from a bulky and costly prototype to a consumer-ready product. What amazes me in particular about the live subtitling and the real-time map navigation features is that it sounds like pure magic and would truly transform the way we engage with the world around us. It is a strong move in the right direction, where augmented reality becomes natural.

I was only reluctant about the privacy issue of sporting a Meta-controlled computer on my face and the closed ecosystem, which Mark, too, also mentioned. However, the technology itself is extremely persuasive.

Final Thoughts

The video is an incredible glimpse of the Meta Ray-Ban Smart Glasses, which demonstrates how smart glasses are not merely a good one but have now turned out to be a really good one.

The fast innovations have indeed made me think that a future that is post-smartphone and in which technology is literally a part of what we see is closer than we realize. The wearables innovation is a thrilling period!
